Getting into fly fishing requires patience, attention to detail, a desire to explore nature and a few key knots to get going. Forming strong connections between your flies and the rod tip is one of the most important factors to having consistent success in the field. 

Despite having no viable search on the popular online search engine, Wikipedia, the first knot to launch a series of knot videos is the 'Clinch Knot.'

The Clinch knot is arguably the most widely utilized knot in fly fishing, especially for trout anglers like ourselves. In the video Golden Fly Shop content manager, Davis James, demonstrates the clinch knot with para-cord so we can get a closer look at the process.  

Another knot less widely known then the blood knot or surgeon's knot is the "double uni" knot.

This connection is great for tying together similar or varying diameters of tippet/leader material and frankly, is much easier to tie than a blood knot.

The key to this knot is ensuring to pinch the wraps as you move away from the connection point to the standing end so when you cinch the materials down the knot formed is small and unobtrusive.

-- Garcia's Mini Hot Mayfly (Tan) -- 

This weeks FOTW is Garcia's Mini Hot Mayfly from Umpqua Feather Merchants. You may recognize it as the same fly from last weeks newsletter but in an alternate color. 

Greg Garcia's Mini Hot Mayfly is a parachute style mayfly imitation with a twist. Incorporating a design feature from his popular Mini Hot Caddis/attractor the Garcia's Mini Hot Mayfly does a great job at enticing trout feeding on adult mayflies. The Mini Hot Mayfly in the tan color-way from Umpqua Feather Merchants is a killer imitation of the mayfly variants like Blue Winged Olives that we see on rivers and streams in Colorado.

The Mini Hot Mayfly is not only deadly in streams but we also view the pattern as an extremely viable Callibaetis imposter as well.

If you're looking to imitate these still-water mayflies that we see in the summer-time on our favorite lakes be sure to wrap the body taper of this mayfly nice and thin to match the natural form of a Callibaetis. 

SUGGESTED MATERIAL LIST:

• Hook: TMC 100 
• Thread: UNI 8/0 - Tan
• Tail: CDL - Grizzly or Dark Pardo
• Hackle: Whiting Rooster - Medium Dun
• Body: Superfine Dubbing - Olive
• Post: Para Post - White 
• Hot Butt: Chroma Flash - Orange

Suggested Tools: vise, scissors, bobbin, bodkin,
brush, whip finish, Super Glue or UV Glue

Remember that a material list is a good starting point but feel free to adapt the fly design for your needs!
