Sorry for not making as many flies for the week recently, we’ve had a crazy couple of weeks in the shop! That being said, so everyone knows, our future goals for 3 Flies for the Week is to release them on a biweekly basis so we’re not oversaturating you with redundant information. So from here on out, we’re still going to keep the same name, just release them half as much. We appreciate everyone reading along and all the positive feedback we’ve received!

This coming week is looking like it’s going to be a good one. Cooling temperatures throughout the state, in addition to the frequent afternoon storms will bring great fishing conditions. Expect fantastic trico hatches in the morning throughout the state, and depending on where you’re at, there may be caddis, green drakes, yellow sallies, PMD’s, BWO’s, and pseudos. Lately, the best reports we’ve received from customers, guides, and from the shop are coming from Cheesman Canyon, Dream Stream, the Arkansas above Salida, the Eagle, upper Colorado, and Clear Creek. Nymphing has slowly become more prominent in our recent outings, but fish are still very willing to rise to dries or chase a streamer down. Let’s talk about this week’s flies now!

#1: Jig UV Kryptonite Caddis - Olive sz16 2.8mm

If you’ve been reading these blogs for a while, you’ll certainly know that this fly has made the list a time or two. This one of our absolute favorite caddis nymph patterns due to its ultra realism and versatility. During caddis hatches, we particularly like fishing this fly under a small chubby chernobyl that has a darker underside to slightly resemble a large caddis. The chubby isn’t the important part of the equation though, instead this fly fished about two feet under the chubby will pick up many of the suspended fish that are eating the emerging pupae. Even if it isn’t during a more prominent hatch, this does great under an indicator or euro rig in both freestones and tailwaters.

#2: Henneberry Hopper - Tan sz10

The Henneberry Hopper is quickly becoming a very popular pattern that catches a ton of fish. If you can’t tell, this fly is incredibly realistic and the fish certainly feel comfortable eating it because of this factor. The fly is also built on a solid foam construction, allowing superior floatability even after getting ripped up by some fish. I don’t need to say anything more about this fly, just go fish it!!

#3: Dungeon - Black sz2

Yes I’m putting this fly on the list. The all-time classic, most popular streamer pattern that has caught the most trophy sized brown trout in the world has to be on the list this week! I’ve spoken about this fly many-a-times, but if you’re unaware I’ll talk about it a little. This fly’s deer hair head allows the fly to push water that triggers the lateral line of brown trout. So, even in unclear water conditions like the upper Colorado is seeing right now, fish can actively hunt this fly because they can feel it moving through the water. In addition to the push head, the rubberlegs on it disturbs the water as well. The remainder of the body is relatively streamlined, allowing it to swim easily in any water conditions.
