This summer season of fishing has been outstanding thus far. Rivers are looking nice and healthy with the prolonged runoff and almost daily thunderstorms have helped to keep them cool. That said, things are highly vulnerable right now with the high air temperatures. I know I’ve mentioned it already but I feel it’s necessary to keep a constant reminder. Bring a thermometer with you and you’ll be ok!

Everything is highly fishable right now, except for Bear Creek. Please do not fish Bear right now. Water temperatures are climbing over the safe temperature threshold for fishing every single day. Bear’s fish population is predominantly composed of wild stock and it’s our responsibility to take care of these fish in order to enjoy them for years to come. Outside of Bear, we haven’t been seeing any rivers, as of now, that are hitting that threshold. Get out there and fish, yellow sallies, caddis, some tricos, a few green drakes, and PMD’s are hatching around the state right now. Nymphing and dries have been producing the most fish lately, but if you’re looking for “the one” we’d recommend throwing a streamer!

Summertime streamer fishing is amazing and most of the time they’re willing to eat a bigger sized streamer presentation. With that in mind, this week we’re going to focus on three streamer patterns for this week. I had an amazing two days of streamer fishing last week and want to share the flies that were successful for me! So here’s the flies:

#1: Cheech Leech - Black/Red sz1

An ultra swimmy fly with the just right amount of flash, the Cheech Leech is a fantastic streamer. Although black and red may seem gaudy, this is a fantastic coloration for all conditions. This color combination creates an amazing contrast in sunny conditions that the fish just can’t miss. Whereas in cloudy conditions, the red stands out very well in addition to the flash.

#2: Dungeon - Cream sz2

The dungeon, formally known as the sex dungeon, is arguably the most famous streamer in the entire world! This fly has accounted for more 2ft+ brown trout than any other fly in the world, so it’s incredibly hard to argue its success. This fly has every single coloration available on the market, but I really like the white and cream colors with our current water conditions. Flows are dropping and hatchling fish are everywhere right now. Whitefish, suckers, and baby trout are swimming in the waters right now and the brown trout are definitely aware of their presence. So, fishing colors that imitate these food sources will lead to great success this time of the year.

#3: Kreelex - Copper/Gold sz4

This might be one of the ugliest flies out there, but damn does it work. I used to hate this fly and refuse to ever throw it, until I watched two of my friends put on absolute clinics in completely different locations, water temperatures, conditions, etc. I finally put my biases behind and fished a kreelex and ironically had one of the best streamer days I’ve had. This fly is incredibly simple, which is why it works so well! You can fish it solo, run it in tandem with another streamer, dirty water, clear water, stillwater, big water, small creeks, doesn’t matter. This fly catches fish anywhere and at any time.

Best of luck on the water this week and we hope these 3 Flies for the Week: July 23 catch a fish or two for ya. All three flies are available on our website and in the shop.
