The Grand Slam
Xcalak, Mexico is a world renowned permit destination, with an endless amount of flats to cast at tailing fish, your options never seem to stop. Additionally, this area is known for an amazing floating crab bite. Have you ever seen a permit rise on a dry fly? In Xcalak, your odds are incredible high when the sargassum mats blow in.
In addition to permit, thousands of bonefish call this place home. These fish average 2-4lbs, but unlike anywhere else in this Mexico and Belize, there's a great shot of encountering double digit bones.
The area is also home to a great population of tarpon, both resident and migratory. Like anywhere else in the world, the migratory fish show up mid-late spring and will stay until mid-late summer. If you're unfamiliar, migratory tarpon have the ability to grow upwards of 300lbs. These giants are rarely caught, with most fish seen between 50-150lbs, all of which are a true trophy!
If you're looking to chase the Grand Slam, or just an overall great experience chasing flats species, this is THE place to go!
Gear for the Grand Slam Species
Traditionally, the three rods to bring to Central America was an 8wt, 10wt, and 12wt. Now with the change in modern graphite, most people throw an 8wt for bonefish, 9wt for permit, and 11wt for tarpon. Floating lines should be equipped for all these rods, with a clear tipped line like Scientific Anglers Magnitude series being highly encouraged. Bringing an intermediate line for a 10 or 11wt is recommended when migratory tarpon around, or if you're looking to chase the ever voracious jack crevalle.
Having a full sealed drag system is your reels is imperative for success. Without it, reels will lock up and be utterly useless in as little as a day. Luckily there's plenty of reels on the market with a saltwater capable drag system, regardless of your budget we'll get you geared up for success.
There's plenty of rods, reels, and lines on the market, in order to prevent any confusion, let us walk you through the correct gear needed for this amazing flats trip!
